Thing 4: Blogging Begins with Reading

The first blog I read was Why I Don’t Assign Homework.  I found it very interesting with a variety of views on the pros and cons of giving homework to kids.  I like the independent thought that you get from different people that responded to the original post.  It allows you to get a real feel for what has worked for people and what has not and also why they may think that it did or did not.  It makes you think, and sometimes that is good. J  As for my personal opinion, I have grown to appreciate the repetition of working out problems.  Doing extra problems has always helped me, though it was only in college that I admitted this to myself and therefore would do it on my own.  Having a more structured time in class where every last minute was used to the fullest to work additional problems.  I liked that idea, then maybe I wouldn’t have had to do so many on my own.

The 2nd blog I read was Patrick’s Update.   To have a young one such as Patrick put himself out there like that is scary and wonderful at the same time.  The results from this blog were uplifting and made you want to cheer and encourage Patrick on.  Sometimes the written word can seem more personal and profound then that which is spoken.  This is a great example of how blogs can be used to inspire and uplift others.  On the other hand what can be used for good can also be used for not so good.  What if he had read some negative comments?  I am sure a moderator was used. J

The 3rd blog I would like to comment on is How to Prevent Another Leonardo da Vinci.  What a fascinating read!  Now I know what happened to me.  All of my creative genius was stifled by The System! J  In reality many good points are made and they really make you wonder and think about what is or may be really happening to some or all students.  How do you address this when No child must be left behind?  There are those that belong on the Autobahn where they run at peak efficiency and can really shine and others that can barely make it from one traffic light to the next without blowing a gasket.  Obviously you have everyone in between.  In trying to leave no one behind (an honorable objective) to many are held back and can’t find their way to the expressway and beyond.  What a difficult task to sort it all out!  My head hurts, that is what I get for jumping on the highway!  Back to the streets for me!
